They must have fixed this issue. In Rails 3.0.9, I’m finding that :format => “json” and :format => :json both work in functional tests.

Thanks for posting this! I googled [rails xml "functional test" 406] and found this, which was exactly my problem. Someone else had posted example code using the symbol.
